viruses-In the case of living biological structures, we can now use super resolved fluorescence microscopy to observe molecules as they move around in cells. It should be noted that fluorophores need to be attached to the molecules. There are techniques for this such as exciting all of the fluorophores and de-exciting them until only a single fluorescent molecule remains active. This can be rapidly repeated for all of the fluorophore conjugated molecules present and then an image can be constructed. Another technique is using highly specific excitation wavelengths to target individual molecules with slight variations. This can also be rapidly repeated to construct an image. Using such techniques, one can view structures smaller than half the shortest wavelength of visible light.
