Compound microscope is the most widely used type of microscope in schools or in a microbiology laboratories like in a hospital. It enables the user to see tiny specimens like cells, magnified up to almost 400x the size of object or specimen. The usual specimen that are being observed in a compound microscope are cells, tissues, amoebas, cross section of leaves or stems, tiny particles that cannot be seen by the naked eye.
The compound light microscope’s main feature is the light source, so it is considered a bright field microscope. Invented back in 1595 by Zacharias Jansen, this type of microscope is still the most widely used type of microscope because of its price, but also because of its convenience with viewing bacteria colonies, browsing their movement, analyzing tissue samples, counting and analyzing the content acquired from smears, analyzing cells in a blood sample etc. Its magnifying power is from 4x to 4000x. Other structures which require larger magnifying power, are analyzed with an electron microscope.Because it is made up of more than one lens(Objective lens and Occular lens).
Viruses are very small and cannot be magnified properly even with the use of the strongest compoud light microscope as you say it. you need a more powerful microscope… the electron microscope to view viruses in detail.
Most viruses which have been studied have a capsid diameter between 10 and 300 nanometres. Most viruses are unable to be seen with a light microscope HOWEVER some are as large or larger than the smallest bacteria and can be seen under high optical magnification of a light microscope.
The compound light microscope is an important tool because it allows us to see things that we cannot see with the naked eye.
The ability to see things clearly is known as resolving power. Using a set of lenses and light, a compound light microscope can increase the resolving power of the naked eye over 1000x, thus enabling the ability to see micrometer sized entities such as cells
